We decided today was a good day to
relax. The boys slept in (I wish I could have), then we walked around downtown
Reykjavik after breakfast and shopped a bit, but the best part was the trip out
to the famous Blue Lagoon spa where we had a massage. Now THAT’S my idea of relaxation!
Kaleb was thrilled we had lunch at
a sushi bar in town, complete with a conveyor belt. That kid packed away about seven different
dishes of things, plus miso soup. He
just loves sushi. We were glad to be out
of the rain for a bit this morning as it was coming down so hard when we left
the hotel that we took a taxi for the one-mile ride into town, otherwise we
would have been soaked. The rain stopped
right after lunch, so we walked up and down the main shopping streets, checking
out the souvenirs and cool foods in the grocery stores. Kaleb is already in love with “Skyr” –
something that looks like yogurt but is considered a type of cheese and the
taste is smooth as silk. I like the pear
flavored the best.
I made an appointment via our hotel
for a massage at the Blue Lagoon Spa and when we got there, there was a mix-up
and I had been double booked. Our hotel
can’t seem to get anything right, but this time it worked in our favor. Kory had said earlier that he would have
liked a massage, but he didn’t tell me in time to book it, so I guess God heard
the desires of his heart, and he got a spot after all, as they were totally
full by the time we got there so he would have had no chance of getting one
otherwise.
The lagoon is perfect temperature
water full of minerals and silica, which coats everything in a shiny white
layer. It mats hair like crazy but feels
so nice on skin. The white mud is a
great healer of all things so we all made mud masks and let them dry on our
faces. It was fun to play in the mud
with my child and husband. The massage
was in the water, lying on a floating mat, covered with a special blanket to
keep warm. I never needed to roll over
as she just reached under me to massage my back. It was pretty cool, floating in warm water,
getting a rub down. The whole experience
was more than dreamy. What a treat. Kaleb even found the place enjoyable, but he
didn’t want a massage. Kory didn’t want
his to stop.
The bus took us back to our hotel
and then we walked into town to have dinner at a vegetarian restaurant Kaleb
saw advertised in one of the brochures.
He thought it would be cool to eat in a restaurant that doesn’t serve
any meat, so we did, and it was good.
The sun came out while we were
having dinner so we walked around downtown some more, took some photos of
different things that seem to be uniquely Iceland, then headed back to our
hotel. Another late night, but the day
was just perfect. We are so blessed.
Tomorrow we head home but it won’t
seem so exhausting when we arrive since we are already half way there. We just hop on the plane and seven hours
later we’re back. What a difference it
will be from our usual trips home. It
was a good plan to stop here for a few days.
We might need to do it again.
